Magnificent Art Nouveau jabot pin or brooch in 925/1000 silver, set with a beautiful amber stone surrounded by an Art Nouveau silver mounting with plant motifs.
The pin is twisted and the tip is protected by a cap held by a chain.
It has 3 hallmarks: 1 for the silver fineness: 925, one for the silversmith and one for the origin (I haven't yet managed to identify the last 2).
Baltic amber is a fossilized plant resin produced by conifers approximately 44 million years ago when the Baltic Sea was covered with trees. This amber is called succinite due to its significant succinic acid content (between 3 and 8%). It is the most commonly used for making jewelry. Its colors range from yellow to black, including red, blue, and white. The shores of the Baltic Sea contain the largest and best-known amber deposits.
Amber is called "the gold of the Baltic Sea". To find this precious plant resin, fishermen are willing to brave the icy and tumultuous waters. On an island in northern Germany, pieces of amber sometimes reappear with currents and storms, on the beach or near the rocks. On that day, Henry Engels is lucky: "When the sea releases amber, and you find it, you're happy" (source: France 3, 31/1/2022).
This superb pin is in very good condition and dates from the 1900s. It can be used as an elegant and original brooch.
