Set of 4 magnificent perfume or smelling salt bottles, known as "corsetières" or corset bottles. They date from the 18th century and owe their name to the fact that they were worn in ladies' corsets, between their breasts.

The corset was imported into France in 1532 by Catherine de Medici. "This soon indispensable fashion accessory enjoyed dazzling success with idle women until the 1920s - with an exception in 1789 - because it emphasized, slimmed, and sometimes sublimated their bodies."

Nevertheless, the corset proved to be dangerous for health in more ways than one and, in particular, severely reduced lung capacity. "This breathing difficulty explains why women constantly experienced fainting spells, especially after meals, and why a smelling salt bottle always had to be kept close at hand. They were made to inhale them to revive them, but above all, people rushed to unlace the offending item" (source: https://gallica.bnf.fr/blog/24112021/des-dangers-du-port-du-corset).

This is how the slender smelling salt bottles, known as corsetières, were invented.

According to popular belief, these bottles were also used as "tear catchers" or "lachrymatory bottles" during periods of mourning in the Victorian era, but this is more of a legend!

The bottles offered here, all different, are made of cut glass with fine gold painted stylized decorations. They do not have stoppers because these were most often made of cork and have not been preserved. Very few had a glass stopper.

These pretty bottles are in good overall condition given their age and have practically no chips (note: the decorations show signs of wear, the 15.5 cm bottle has 2 very small chips, 1 on the neck and 1 on the base (see photos) and the 9 cm one has 1 micro-chip on the almost invisible base). These are very beautiful, quality objects!

They will look magnificent in a collector's display case or in a cabinet of curiosities.
