Jean Bérain father or Bérain is a French painter, watercolourist, draftsman, engraver, decorator and theater decorator (1640-1711). Son of an arquebusier from Lorraine, after having studied with Charles Le Brun, he was appointed to the court of Louis XIV in 1674 as draftsman of the King's Chamber and Cabinet. His very varied creations include decorations for operas, parties and funerals, clothes, goldsmiths' and arquebusiers' pieces, models of paneling and ceilings, furniture, garden perspectives, carousels, decorations for the sterns or prows of royal vessels.
