Two elegant silhouettes frozen in satin and lace... This fashion scene, taken from an authentic page of the famous Journal des Dames et des Demoiselles, dates from 1887 and has been hand-enhanced with precious fabrics. This is a mixed media piece, combining press illustration and textile creation.

The Journal des Dames et des Demoiselles is a Belgian periodical founded in 1833 in Brussels. It featured fashion plates, patterns, embroidery tips, literary news, and the latest Parisian trends.
In the 1880s, some pages were printed with sumptuous outfits, which artists or seamstresses would "hand-dress" to create unique decorative objects, highly prized in bourgeois salons.
This type of creation was often made to be framed, given as a gift, or displayed as a testament to female taste and craftsmanship. The edition presented here was published by Abel Goubaud, a renowned publisher known for his elegant publications in Paris.
