Charming small antique black lacquered papier-mâché box dating from the second half of the 19th century, Napoleon III period.
This delicate oval box features a hand-painted decoration. The lid is adorned with a central diamond-shaped medallion depicting two birds facing each other, surrounding a floral wreath. The black background is decorated with fine golden stripes and surrounded by a floral frieze painted in red, green, and gold tones.
The motifs are hand-painted, giving the whole an authentic and slightly naive charm typical of small decorative boxes of the 19th century.
These small papier-mâché boxes were often used on dressing tables to store jewelry, rings, pins, or small souvenirs.
