Large antique Cameo brooch, which can also be worn as a pendant, engraved on shell and set in finely carved vermeil (gilded silver). There is an illegible inscription (name and date?, silversmith?) engraved on the back of the border. No other hallmark, but silver tested. Small safety clasp. Period: late 19th-early 20th century.
The young woman depicted, in the Belle Epoque or Victorian style, is of great delicacy and the brooch is in excellent condition.
