This miniature perfume or smelling salts bottle is richly decorated with embossed shamrocks, engraved into finely engine-turned silver-plated metal. It is suspended from a small chain with a ring, typical of chatelaine objects – those elegant accessories that were attached to the waist or a belt in the 19th century.

But what makes it truly unique is the adorable deer figurine with a golden cross between its antlers, a classic iconography of Saint Hubert, patron saint of hunters and a legendary hermit of the Ardennes. This two-tone (silver and gold) embossed motif gives the piece strong religious and symbolic value.

📌 Features

  • Period: late 19th century to very early 20th century (circa 1880-1910)

  • Origin: probably Germany or Austria (perhaps Tyrol or Bohemia)

  • Style: historicist, inspired by religious romanticism and popular devotional objects

  • Function: smelling salts, perfume, or portable holy water bottle (or even a reliquary ampoule)

  • Dimensions: height 5.5 cm, width 3.5 cm, height with chain 7.5 cm, weight 11 g.
  • Decoration:

    • background entirely covered with stylized shamrocks (symbol of faith, hope, and charity),

    • deer with a red cross, emblem of Saint Hubert's conversion,

    • richly chased openwork hinged stopper,

    • original suspension chain.

  • Condition: very good, noting some wear to the silver plating in places, revealing the gilt brass (especially on the deer and stopper), which is not an issue.

✨ Symbolic Interpretation

This bottle was not just a vanity item: it was also a protective good luck charm, an object that was both practical, religious, and decorative, which a lady (or a pious hunter?) could carry everywhere with her/him.

The cruciferous deer evokes the miraculous conversion of Saint Hubert, who reportedly saw a deer bearing a luminous cross between its antlers while hunting.

A talisman full of meaning, where the world of the sacred, nature, and exceptional craftsmanship meet.
