Adorable little antique brass matchbox, adorned on its lid with a painted polychrome enamel plate.
The poetic decor depicts a young woman in ancient costume playing the mandolin by moonlight, while a small cat lies peacefully at her feet. In the blue sky, a moon with a sketched face observes the scene.
This composition deliciously evokes the theatrical and romantic world of Pierrot and Columbine, particularly popular in the decorative arts of the interwar period.
The reverse side of the lid is also enamelled white. The box retains its striated striker for matches on one of its edges.
A charming little collector's item, both decorative and unusual, which will particularly appeal to lovers of boudoir objects, small antique items and... cats!
