Here is what each monkey symbolizes:

1. 🙈 Mizaru, covering his eyes – "See no evil"

2. 🙉 Kikazaru, covering his ears – "Hear no evil"

3. 🙊 Iwazaru, covering his mouth – "Speak no evil"

This maxim comes from Asian philosophy, notably Buddhism and Confucian thought. It is believed to have been popularized in Japan in the 17th century, although its roots are probably Chinese. It can be found carved at the Tōshō-gū temple in Nikkō, Japan.

The Japanese pun comes from the suffix "-zaru" (negative form of verbs) which resembles "saru" (monkey), giving rise to this beautiful metaphorical representation.

These three monkeys are highly sought after by collectors of symbolic or esoteric objects. They are also a popular gift, embodying wisdom and good conduct.
