Here is a rare pair of earthenware salt and pepper shakers, shaped like toucans with pink beaks and stylized plumage, most likely from the workshop of Gabriel Fourmaintraux in Desvres, active between the 1930s and 1950s.
These hand-painted pieces, both utilitarian and decorative, reflect the period's taste for naive forms and exotic animals. The expressive treatment of the eyes and the vivid palette are reminiscent of Fourmaintraux's whimsical creations in the spirit of modernized regional faience.
Not only decorative, these pieces are still usable with their small stopper allowing them to be filled with salt and pepper from below.
