Lovely and large earthenware cider pitcher from the Gien Manufacture, decorated with Rouen in shades of blue.
The manufacturing stamp on the underside of the pitcher dates from the period 1866/1875, the R mark indicates the year 1867 as the year of manufacture.
La Faïencerie de Gien was created in 1821 in Gien in the Loire Valley, in the heart of France. The 19th century gave birth to numerous production sites, heirs of the ceramists of past centuries. Its bicentennial history is linked to the name of its creator, the Englishman Thomas Hall. Hall settled in Gien and purchased the enclosure and buildings of the Minimes convent located on the banks of the Loire. At this time, the town of Gien had several assets: it was an important commercial crossroads, the town was full of raw materials (clay, sand, siliceous pebbles from the Loire) and above all the Loire allowed the transport of wood from the forests of Orléans for cooking ovens. The period 1850-1914, to which this beautiful pitcher belongs, corresponds to the golden age of Gien earthenware. The Manufacture thus offers decorative pieces and table services which are inspired by Rouen, Saxony, Marseille,..., the Renaissance, the Ottoman Empire, Antiquity... Production continues to grow and this period is certainly the richest and most inventive of the Manufacture. In addition to the different inspirations, the richness of the collections is provided by the collaboration with painters, engravers... who are invited to imagine new decorations and forms... The Faïencerie de Gien is diversifying from a technical and artistic.
