Miniature portrait of an elegant 16th-century lady with a pearl necklace, in a pretty gilded wooden frame.

Very finely executed and signed Silver (?).

The protective glass is slightly domed. The back is covered with burgundy red felt. This is a 20th-century work.

The term miniature refers to a small-sized painting, usually a portrait. First appearing in the 16th century, the miniature had its golden age in Europe between 1760 and 1840. The invention and widespread use of photography heralded its decline. It was from the time of Louis XV, in the 18th century, that miniatures began to be painted on ivory, whose color was close to human skin, until around 1850. The fragility of ivory necessitated careful framing and protection by glass. Miniatures were mostly done in gouache or watercolor by specialized painters called miniaturists... (source: www.authenticite.fr). Here, the painting's support is difficult to determine with certainty.

This beautiful object is in very good condition. It is a lovely collector's item.
