This delicate earthenware milk jug bears the mark of the famous Belgian manufacture Mouzin Lecat & Cie, established in Wasmuël in the mid-19th century.
Located in the Mons region, the Mouzin Lecat & Cie factory was founded around 1836 under the impetus of Jean-Baptiste Mouzin, a pioneer of Belgian earthenware. Initially established in Mons, it quickly expanded to Wasmuël, a small Hainaut town that would become an important ceramic production center in the 19th century.
The factory specialized in fine earthenware with printed decoration, a process inherited from English techniques (transferware), which allowed for the precise reproduction of complex patterns on everyday tableware and objects. Romantic scenes, rural landscapes, flowers, animals, or small figures thus adorned the tea sets, plates, milk jugs, and sugar bowls from Mouzin-Lecat.
Recognized for the quality of its decorations and the elegance of its forms, the factory was active until the end of the 19th century, before undergoing mergers and acquisitions with other Belgian earthenware factories.
Today, pieces signed "MOUZIN LECAT & Cie – WASMUËL" are highly sought after for their old-world charm, their beautiful patina, and their roots in the history of Belgian decorative arts.
