Pretty old jeweled telescope with alran spring. The handle is chiseled. It is worn as a pendant and dates from the 1900s. It bears the Alran brand (see photo).
This Alran spring-loaded telescope was made by Albert Ranft (1864 - 1946), Pforzheim, Germany. Albert Ranft & Co. was a major manufacturer of opera glasses before and after the First World War. He was once called “the king of telescopes”. He made pieces of gold, platinum, silver and alran.
Alran was an alloy he developed and patented. It is a hard metal and resembles silver.
This Belle Epoque lorgnette works perfectly: a small push button allows it to be opened, and it is in very good condition.
It will be charming in a window or a cabinet of curiosities.
Dimensions: glasses and handle: 14 cm, glasses alone: 10 cm by 4 cm, weight 17 g.
