Very rare brown Bakelite tobacco jar made by the Bakemat company, which was located in Brussels.
Discovered in 1909 by Leo Baekeland, Bakelite was the first plastic material to be produced industrially, revolutionizing our daily lives by ushering in the age of plastic. Lightweight, resistant to heat and many chemicals, Bakelite is an excellent electrical insulator, quickly adopted by the electrical construction industry. This new resin was also the first thermosetting plastic at the time, a property that was exploited for numerous industrial applications, particularly for manufacturing radio and telephone casings, as well as jewelry and toys... This attractive tobacco jar has a screw-on lid. It has a superb, very geometric and futuristic shape, with a three-legged "UFO" look!
It is in excellent condition, no dents or cracks. It is from the Art Deco period and dates from the 1920s-30s, so it is now over 100 years old!
It can still be used as a tobacco jar but can also easily be repurposed to store small secret objects as its opening is not apparent. In any case, it will be very decorative, elegant and original on a desk, for example.
