Very rare brown Bakelite tobacco pot made by the Bakemat firm which was located in Brussels. Discovered in 1909 by Leo Baekeland, Bakelite was the first plastic material to be produced industrially: it revolutionized our daily lives by inaugurating the era of plastic. Lightweight, resistant to heat and many chemicals, Bakelite is an excellent electrical insulator, which was quickly adopted by the electrical construction industry. This new resin was also at the time the first thermosetting plastic, a property which was exploited for numerous industrial applications, notably to manufacture the casings of radio sets and telephones, as well as jewelry and toys... This pretty tobacco jar has a screw-on lid. It has a superb shape, very geometric and futuristic, with a "UFO" side at 3 feet!
It is in excellent condition, no dents or cracks. It is from the Art Deco period and dates from the 20s and 30s, so it is over 100 years old today!
It can always be used as a tobacco pot but also easily be diverted to store small secret objects because its opening is not visible. In any case, it will be very decorative, elegant and original on a desk for example.
