Beautiful pair of vintage cross earrings for pierced ears, made by Maison Monet USA. They are typical of the Baroque of the 1970s and of the style of Yves Saint-Laurent with whom Monet was associated for a few years.

They are adorned with 4 stones (yellow, red, blue and green), 1 large pearl in the center and 4 small pearls in the corners. They are mounted on a beautiful golden metal.

The Monet mark is affixed to the clasps.

In perfect condition !

As its name does not indicate, Monet is not a French house, it marked, by its creations, the design of American vintage jewelry.
Jay Brothers & Michael Chernow founded Monocraft in 1929. They are known for their handbags adorned with the famous gold-plated monogram. They are brought to create jewelry from 1935. In 1937 they change the name of the company which becomes Monet.

During the 1940s, they produced jewelry in gold plated and vermeil, Monet acquired his letters of nobility with modern designs and brooches original. They are at the origin of a revolutionary invention, the ear clip for earrings (patent of 1947), they then invented the nail with tips for pierced ears which is the norm today.

During the 1950s and 1960s, the success continued. Monet was the first company to sign all of its jewelry. Monet jewelry was sold under license at Yves Saint Laurent. In 1977, Monet produced a line of high-end jewelry called "Ciani".

In 1981 Yves Saint Laurent and Monet joined forces for 4 years to produce the jewels of the French brand. Monet was always considered ahead of his time. Several designers worked for Monet, but the most emblematic is surely Lillian Baker ( necklace on the cover) (1925-1975).
Monet was bought by General Mills in 1968, sold to Crystal Brands in 1989 then resold to Chase Capital Partners and finally to Liz Claiborne in 2000 (Source: http://www.les-bijoux-anciens.fr/histoire-des- american-jewelry-monet/).

This is a very fine piece of authentic branded jewelry and a rare piece.
