Superb Art Deco carafe with ceramic handle from Gouda (Netherlands). This magnificent object dates from the 1920s. It is a production of the Zuid Holland pottery in Gouda.
This carafe is signed at the bottom with a hand-painted PZH mark (a house with a door, the Lazarus door of Gouda), a model or serial number (54), a size (2/3?), the name of the decoration (Beek), a year symbol (?) as well as the number of the month of production of the vase (?), a signature of the painter (AYR?) and the designations "Gouda" and "Zuid Holland". Additionally, a few inscribed numbers and letters can be vaguely seen, among which one reads a "B" and "Z". On the foot is still stuck a label marking "Zuid-Holland Gouda".
The carafe is painted by hand and the decor used is called Beek. The technique is that of a matt glaze, which means that the decorations were not painted underglaze (under a transparent glaze), but were painted on a creamy white glaze ground and fused with this glaze during a second cooking. This process is similar to the creation of pewter-glazed Delftware and was first adopted by PZH for Gouda-style earthenware in 1909. The interior of the vase is also fully glazed.
The carafe is closed by a perforated ceramic cone finished with a cork stopper.
Very pretty assorted colors: green, rust, cobalt blue, brown, black and cream white, and stylized Art Deco patterns. Lots of elegance!
It is in excellent condition, there are no cracks or chips in the exterior ceramic (just a small mark of wear / friction from a cord which was used to suspend it (?) above the conical cap ( see photo), some very small signs of wear inside the neck and wear of time on the easily replaceable cork).
It has kept all the liveliness and freshness of its satin colors.
This is an authentic and rare object.
