Delicate small vase in white opaline, adorned with a hand-painted floral landscape and signed Wirths.
Since the exhibition and book (2009) on the glassmaker Pierre Jost of Dolhain, we know that Pierre Jost was a glass artist who operated his workshop in the village of Dolhain in Belgium from 1918 to 1936. He decorated approximately 250,000 pieces per year and employed 40 decorators, mainly women. Jost, born in 1885, first entered the Wirths factory in 1901, where he learned the trade.
The glass pieces were purchased externally, mainly from Val Saint-Lambert, but also from other Walloon glassworks (Scailmont and Herbatte). In 1922, Wirths moved to Verviers, so the mention of Dolhain and Wirths on the same piece means it predates 1922. Jost remained in Dolhain and opened his own workshop, producing the same items as Wirths, later expanding with other decorated pieces - until 1938. Wirths in Verviers also did not survive the economic crisis.
Here, we have the following inscriptions on the base: "Véritable opale Wirths" (Genuine Wirths Opal), "Importé de Belgique" (Imported from Belgium), and "Deauville" on the back. It is therefore a charming small vase imported from Belgium and sold in France as a souvenir from Deauville.
This pretty vase is in very good condition (no chips or cracks, a very slight wear to the paint in one inconspicuous part of the design) and makes quite an impression.
It will delight any collector.
