Pretty pair of cups and saucers, with flowers on a white background in Andenne porcelain.

The extraction of plastic earth from Anden (Belgium) dates back almost a millennium. When Europe discovered Chinese porcelain at the beginning of the 16th century, it was amazed by its qualities: whiteness, translucency, resistance to scratches by steel, healthiness. The difficulties and costs of importing these extraordinary ceramics from the Far East make them very luxury products reserved for the privileged. Very quickly Westerners wanted to imitate the Chinese. In vain, because the secret of porcelain manufacturing was well guarded. We therefore try to imitate him without succeeding in bringing together all his qualities. This is how the bodies of soft porcelain and fine earthenware were composed. In the Southern Netherlands, exclusively bone china and fine earthenware were produced until the end of the 18th century. Hard porcelain developed there under the French regime (source Bibliotheca andana, Hauregard Collection). Andenne has seen the development of numerous earthenware and porcelain factories on its territory which produced marvelous pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries which are a delight for collectors.
